The King Blues – ‘Save The World, Get The Girl’ (Island)

Picking up yet more radio airtime, The King Blues are a real rarity. They are a success story born from the UK punk scene. The band has gone from playing squat parties to repeat appearances at the Reading and Leeds festivals and have recently graced the cover of a well known weekly music magazine.

New single ‘Save The World, Get The Girl’ will no doubt propel the band further into the mainstream’s consciousness. Their ‘poppiest’ effort to date, it’s a typically upbeat anthem that features their trademark ukulele punctuating clear ska influences. Itch’s rasped vocals are prominent and are used to drive the single’s melody.

Such a catchy sing-along track is the perfect vehicle for the group to get their message heard. And undeniably The King Blues are a band with an agenda. ‘Save The World, Get The Girl’ rails against the current political climate, questions the motives of going to war and declares the moon landing futile. The track certainly covers a few bases.

Endearingly the song is ultimately about hope. And whilst lyrics like “We put the oops back in troops,” won’t be admired for their wit and guile, the band has managed to capture the dissenting voice of youth. Unsubtle and accessible, The King Blues are prompting people to think about politics and protest.
